Calcium is a major mineral essential for healthy bones and teeth. There are several minerals known to be essential to the human body and which must be obtained from food. The major minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride and potassium) are needed in the greatest quantities or are present in large amounts in the body. The three main functions of minerals are as constituents of the skeleton, as soluble salts which help control the composition of the body fluids, and as essential adjuncts to the action of many enzymes and other proteins.

Calcium Kidney Stones - Important Details You Must Know

According to recent studies it has been reported that almost one in twenty women and one in ten men will experience kidney stones in their lifetime. Generally these are common when a parent or grandparent has also experienced the same renal stone disease, (the disease that causes them) and also certain other factors play a contributing role such as age, gender, climate and also the diet.

Kidney stones are caused by a varying combination of different factors. There are a few different types of kidney stones which are all caused by different chemicals which would normally be absorbed and dissolved into urine but if the chemicals become too concentrated, they are likely to build up and form stones. The calcium kidney stone is the most common type of stone and this is caused by an excess of calcium.

Calcium is normally used by the bones and teeth to ensure that they are kept healthy and strong but sometimes there may be too much of the mineral in the body and this is when a problem can arise. It has been reported that as many as eighty percent of all kidney stones will contain calcium in varying concentrations and the most common form is in the way of calcium oxalate. However, calcium phosphate is another more uncommon form that cannot be ruled out.

Generally a calcium kidney stone will be more inclined to form in a body of someone that has a lot of Vitamin D present in their body. This kidney stone can also be caused by someone that is suffering from an overactive parathyroid gland and also those suffering with a disease which is called sarcoidosis. The calcium kidney stone can also form when a person is currently experiencing medical problems with their kidneys and it is also reported that many victims of cancer tend to suffer from them as well.

There is no real shape or size that can be associated with the calcium kidney stone. They can be large or small, smooth or jagged and some of them can even be rather spiky in appearance and texture. There has been a relationship noted of those that eat or drink a lot of dairy produce being more at risk of getting a calcium kidney stone and therefore one of the main preventative measures is to cut down on the amount of dairy gods that are consumed.

The calcium kidney stone is more likely to occur when a person has some sort of history of it in their family background but regardless of this, they can happen at any time for a number of different reasons and once a patient has one, they are likely to experience them again which calls upon the need for lifestyle changes to stop a further calcium kidney stone from happening.
